Vasant Panchami is one of the important festivals celebrated all over the world

Vasant Panchami is one of the important festivals celebrated all over the world. Here ‘Vasant’ means spring and ‘Panchami’ means the fifth day of the spring season. According to the Hindu calendar, this festival is celebrated every year on the fifth day of the month of Magh and this day falls most probably in the months of February and March. This day is celebrated in the honor of Goddess Saraswati. It is believed that the origins of this auspicious festival lie in the Aryan period when Aryans came and settled in India through the Khyber Pass by crossing the Saraswati River. At that time, most of their developments took place along the banks of the Saraswati River and thus this river began to be associated with the two aspects, i.e., fertility and knowledge. From then, this festival began to be celebrated.

This great festival is also celebrated to venerate Goddess Saraswati, the goddess of education and learning. The history behind this is as here: A popular poet, Kalidasawhen married to a beautiful princess, he was kicked off from the bed by his wife as she thought that he was a foolish man and he went to commit suicide. At that time, the Goddess Saraswati emerged from the river and ask him to take a dip there. Kalidasa agreed to take the dip and he became so much knowledgeable and began writing poetry after taking a dip in the holy river. Hence, this day is also dedicated to the knowledge.

This festival also indicates the on-coming of the spring season and is largely celebrated by the farmers in Northern India. On this day, people arrange food for the Brahmins. The color ‘Yellow’ is strongly associated with this festival and has a great significance. The origin of this color are the fields of mustard which can be highly seen in Punjab and Haryana during this period. Kite flying is one of the other activities being associated with this festival. On this day, children and adults usually fly kites in order to celebrate freedom and enjoyment.

There is a major reason behind the starting of the school sessions in the month of March,i.e., this festival often comes in the month of February and March and thus the school session starts to initiate studies (learning) among the young ones. Many people distribute the sweets and books to the poor ones on this day.

The significance of Vasant Panchami:

It is an auspicious Hindu festival, popularly celebrated in the honor of Goddess Saraswati, the deity of knowledge, art, and music. The fifth day of Magh on which this day is celebrated is also considered to be the first day of spring. Goddess Saraswati is dedicated to the knowledge, calmness, and serenity. She is always seen to be seated on a white lotus, wearing a pure white silk saree and holding a book in her hand with the eyes full of compassion. Her four hands denote the aspects of human personality, i.e., mind, intellect, alertness, and ego. Holding a lotus in her hands is the symbol of knowledge. A white swan is considered to be her ride which is known for its capability of separating water from the milk which teaches us to develop the ability to discriminate the bad from the good.
